Heart and Brain Food - Omega 3 Fish oil
October 4th 2006 00:45
The benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids, found mainly in fish (or a good quality supplement) are too numerous for this little blog. Do your own search on Google for ‘Benefits of Omega 3 fish oil’ and you’ll find a stack of sites quoting research articles galore on the benefits.
For starters, research has conclusively shown that Omega 3 fatty acids reduce the chances of cardiovascular disease in a big way. Fish oil is also an anti-inflammatory, so it’s an ideal supplement for those suffering from joint pains and arthritis. There is also much research on the use of high grade fish oil as a natural anti-depressant (although the doses are quite high for this). Research also shows that a diet high in Omega 3 fatty acids is also good for preventing, or slowing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Omegas 3’s are also essential for proper brain function and eye health.
What are the sources of Omega 3? Well the best types of fish to eat are mackerel, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon. It is best to have a serve of fish 2 times a week minimum if you can. If you can’t stomach the thought of eating fish, there are many supplements out there containing fish oil. However, if you want high grade fish oil (free from most impurities), you can take ‘Ultra Refined Fish oil’ otherwise known as ‘Pharmaceutical Grade Fish oil’. It is more expensive but the purity and quality is much higher. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.
My soon to be wife had problems with high cholesterol, even though she was an avid exercise ‘freak’ and a good eater (still is). We were told about the benefits of fish oil on lowering triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the blood, so we gave it a try. Because I’m a natural cynic, I urged her to have a blood test prior to starting out on a course of high grade fish oil. (I was sick of diet advice and was out to prove em all wrong) She did have the test. She started taking the capsules every day (2 by 1000mg capsules each day) and after 6 weeks we had another blood test done. Her cholesterol had dropped from 6.6 to 5.2 total cholesterol. Nothing major had changed in her diet apart from the Omega 3 supplement. That was proof enough for me. We’ve been taking them ever since (4 years later).
If you have any allergy problems with fish, consult your doctor prior to taking any fish oil supplement! MB
